ROUND 1: 10 – 9

ROUND 2: Submission

Khabib was able to apply pressure very early on. Justin Gaethje was able to stay in the fight with leg kicks and some success with strikes. At the end of the first round however, Khabib had full guard and was attempting an armbar. The round would end, not allowing Khabib to complete the submission.

Head coach to Justin Gaethje, Trevor Wittman, was instructing him to slow down and to not get sloppy. While Justin may not have won the round, he was still in high spirits going into the second round. Khabib would continue to press forward from the beginning of the second, securing a takedown effortlessly. Khabib would catch Gaethje in a triangle choke and put him to sleep.

At the end of the fight, Khabib walked to the middle of the octagon and broke down. With the recent loss of his father coach, and role model, the fight journey for Khabib has come to an end. In the post-fight interview with Jon Anik, Khabib said, “This is my last fight, there’s no way I’m going to be back without my father. Khabib Nurmagomedov is retiring with a 29-0 record. He had a 13-0 run in the UFC. Khabib’s last request from the UFC was “to be put as #1 in the pound-for-pound rankings”. Who can argue that now
